Packaging can look perfect on screen—and fail on press. Use this prepress checklist to prevent color mismatches, missing bleeds, dieline errors, and costly reprints.
Why Print-Ready Design Matters
Small oversights can turn into big delays. We work with design teams and printers daily to ensure artwork files translate accurately into the final printed piece.
1) Start With the Right Dieline
The dieline is your package blueprint. Confirm it matches the final prototype and printer specs.
- Confirm dieline matches final prototype
- Include fold, cut, and score lines in spot colors
- Maintain at least 1/8-inch bleed
- Match substrate thickness (SBS, corrugated, rigid)
- Label panels for orientation
Pro tip: Request the printer’s dieline template—don’t redraw without their specs.
2) Set Up Color Correctly
- Work in CMYK for production files
- Use Pantone spot colors only where necessary
- Calibrate monitors and proof against swatches
- Outline fonts and embed images
- Request press proofs before production
3) Resolution & Image Quality
- 300 dpi minimum at print size
- Avoid upscaling web images
- Keep logos and type as vector
- Flatten transparencies before handoff
4) Typography & Readability
- Minimum font size: 6pt sans-serif / 7pt serif
- Ensure high text-to-background contrast
- Avoid fine text over metallic or gloss finishes
- Keep text away from folds or glue areas
5) Finishes, Coatings & Effects
Finishes elevate the tactile experience:
- AQ or UV coatings for shine
- Soft-touch lamination for a premium feel
- Foil stamping or embossing
- Spot gloss accents
Tip: Create a separate spot layer for each finish labeled FOIL, EMBOSS, etc.
6) File Prep & Handoff
- Package all links and fonts (Collect for Output)
- Provide layered PDF/X-1a or Illustrator files
- Include mockups or 3D renders
- Add color, coating, and quantity notes
- Verify barcode scannability in grayscale
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Missing bleed on background artwork
- Unsupported transparency effects
- Inconsistent dieline scaling
- QR codes too close to folds
- RGB proofs instead of CMYK prints
